Setting it up

Unzip the download somewhere permanent, like Documents\McServer. Not inside the zip itself.
Double-click start.bat. That's it — nothing to install.
Your browser opens. Create a server, then open Invite friends and press Claim it to get your free address.

You'll also need Java — which version depends on the Minecraft version you pick. The app checks for you and tells you exactly which one to install, with a link.

Updating from an older version? Unzip the new one over the top of your existing folder. Your worlds and settings live in a data folder that isn't in the download, so they survive. If you unzip somewhere new, it'll look like your servers vanished.

If Windows warns you when you run start.bat, click More info then Run anyway. That warning appears for any program without a paid signing certificate. You can verify you got the real file with the checksum below.

Keeping the app open

Your server runs inside McServer, so the window has to stay open while people are playing. Closing it stops the server — your world is saved, but everyone gets disconnected.
